One of the more interesting banks I’ve come across recently is Perk Street Financial.  A Boston-based start-up, Perk Street operates over twice as many free ATMs as Bank of America and offers two percent rewards on debit card purchases.  More info from their site below…

Working to change banking for the better

We founded PerkStreet FinancialSM because we saw the chance to use our 50+ collective years of banking experience to build something that really matters.

The need

We couldn’t help noticing that millions of Americans were getting very little from their banks:

  • Spending responsibly using a debit card meant missing out on great debit rewards
  • Calling your bank for help often meant getting stuck on hold
  • Finding the nearest free ATM sometimes didn’t seem worth the trouble
  • Asking simple questions didn’t always lead to clear answers

Our vision

We believe that banks should align their goals with their customers’ best interests – to give them what they want and need – and that it’s possible to build a successful business this way.

Who we serve

We serve people who manage their money responsibly, and want to get rewarded for it – not for getting into debt.

We serve people who prefer to bank using their computers, ATMs and phones – not branches.

We serve people who believe that positive change in banking can happen and choose to be a part of it.

Blog (2/3): The Family CEO

BLOG EXCERPT:  The Family CEO is authored by me, Julie, a wife and mother at home in the Midwest. I started the blog in 2006 and it’s undergone a number of transitions since that time. Above all, however, it’s a family finance blog that focuses on the following: making money (especially from home or online), saving money, paying off debt, and simplifying life.

I’ve been very inspired by the book Millionaire Women Next Door by Thomas Stanley. The chapter ‘Why Not Run the Family Office’ is of special interest to me because running the family office is what I do. I keep the books and payroll for two small family businesses and I manage our family’s finances, including banking, billpaying, and investing, I also have the responsibility for most of our family’s spending. And I think about it all a little too much.

I try to avoid boring people at dinner and cocktail parties with my personal finance passion, so this blog is an outlet and a way for me to connect with other like-minded people. With that in mind, I want to sincerely thank you for stopping by The Family CEO and if you found something interesting, I hope you’ll take time to comment on the post or email me at thefamceo@yahoo.com.

ARTICLE EXCERPT: There are three main groups of people who may want to apply for a credit card for people with limited or no credit history: (i) students, (ii) young adults who are just entering the workforce, and (iii) recent immigrants and adults who have been using debit cards for most of their lives.

It’s downright difficult to get any sort of loan without 3 or more credit lines open in your credit history, and a credit history of at least a few years, whether you want to buy your first home, or lease a car. Therefore, instead of swearing off credit cards or refusing to ever use them, it makes sense to at least spend a very small and controllable amount of money on credit cards over the course of a few years before you seek out a loan.

However, there is a bit of a chicken and egg problem. Without credit, you can’t qualify for many credit cards. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the best credit cards for people with limited or no credit history.

For those who don’t know, one of the cast members of the popular TV show Glee happens to be an individual with a disability.  An excerpt and link to a recent interview she gave is below.

ARTICLE EXCERPT:  We recently were lucky enough to have Lauren Potter, who plays the role of Becky Jackson on Glee, answer a few of our questions. You probably remember Becky from the episode “Wheels” when she auditioned for the Cheerios squad, and actually made it! The episode as a whole was definitely a fan favorite, so we’re happy to see Becky’s return to Glee for the next 2 episodes!

I’m sure you’ve been asked this a million times, but could you talk a little bit about how you got cast as Becky?

I got a call from Gail Williamson at Hearts and Halos (the Down Syndrome Association of LA talent agency) that Glee was looking for a girl to play “Becky Jackson”. I went for an audition, got a call back and then I got a call saying that I got the part!

Website (1/5): Relay Rides

WEBSITE EXCERPT:  RelayRides is the world’s first neighbor-to-neighbor carsharing service. We enable car owners to lend out their private vehicles to their neighbors by providing the insurance and technology to make the transaction safe, convenient, and easy.

RelayRides represents the first service for car owners to monetize one of their most valuable assets, by enabling them to make thousands of dollars per year by sharing their car when it would otherwise be idle.

Furthermore, we provide affordable, on-demand mobility to those who need access to a car, making it easier to live without owning a personal vehicle and allowing members to save thousands of dollars per year compared to car ownership. RelayRides leads to fewer cars on the road, less driving, and cleaner air for us all.
